Murals of La Jolla was established in 2010 to commission public art projects that activate and transform the visual landscape of La Jolla. The program is rooted in the belief that art in public spaces can spark meaningful connection, foster a sense of place, and contribute to the vitality of a community. Over the past fifteen years, large-scale murals have appeared throughout the village—some in prominent locations, others nestled in quieter corners—each one inviting engagement, reflection, and a renewed perspective on the everyday. Murals of La Jolla celebrates how design can serve both form and function—how it can be visually compelling while also enriching public life. These murals are not only meant to be seen, but to be experienced. They invite people to pause, to engage, and to connect with one another and their environment. As expressions of both artistic vision and social purpose, the works on view show how creative design in public space can contribute to a stronger, more inclusive community. To date, the project has commissioned 50 murals by a diverse range of local, national, and international artists. From emerging talents to established voices, each artist brings a unique perspective to the streets of La Jolla, offering a dynamic and evolving portrait of contemporary art in public space. Join fellow art enthusiasts for a free guided walking tour on Saturday, September 20, at 12 p.m. or Sunday, September 21, at 11 a.m. Online registration is required. Sixteen murals are currently on view, and each tour includes more than half of them. Tours depart from the Athenaeum and last approximately 90 minutes. The route changes regularly to highlight new works. The walk is gentle, but we recommend comfortable shoes. Participants are responsible for their own safety.
