Will is a scientist, founder, "operator", and investor based in San Diego, California, with his professional background highlighting life science tools, reagents, medical devices, and diagnostics. As an investor and advisor, he co-founded and managed Phase Two Ventures in 2023, focusing on seed-stage investments in life science R&D, as well as ScholarNexus LLC back in 2007, assisting companies with financing, deal advisory, and technical due diligence. In 2024, he published the book Venture Capital for Life Scientists, helping entrepreneurs and investors advance this industrial vertical. As a startup builder and operator, Will has co-founded Defined Bioscience in 2019, developing chemically defined cell culture media; Arima Genomics in 2017, as an academic spinout to advance 3D genomics; NanoCellect Biomedical in 2009, focusing on flow cytometry technology; and as Director of Product Development for NeuroEnabling Technologies (2012-14), a UCLA spinout that later merged with GTX Medical and subsequently held an IPO as Onward Medical. Prior to his switch into a journey of industry, Will has performed 14 years of research within Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) labs, working with multiple National Academy mentors. His academic career also includes roles at the Salk Institute, UCSD, Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, and the University of Washington. He holds a BA in History of Science and Pre-Medical studies from the University of Washington, a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the UCSD School of Medicine, and has completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Salk Institute. He has authored 33 peer-reviewed publications and holds 19 patents to this date.
