AI Then, Now, and Tomorrow: From “AGI by 2100” to “AGI by 2030”

In my 2019 Portland Startup Week session on advanced AI, the working assumption was that human-level general intelligence would arrive around the year 2100. To make that timeline feel real, I opened with a slide of my newborn granddaughter and noted that this future could unfold within her lifetime. Seven years later in 2026, the assumptions have radically compressed, and it won’t just be babies that live to see AI that is more capable than all humans, it will be all of us. This forward-looking session revisits those earlier forecasts and contrasts them with today’s AI reality. We will examine what this acceleration means for founders, investors, startup teams, and all of humanity; now and in the near post-AGI world. I will provide content on AI to get things started, and then the session will evolve into a discussion with attendees. The goal will be for us all to learn from each other and leave with ideas and actions we can take to not only use AI but positively shape our coming world with AGI. Parking: Free parking is available in the large lot on your right after you enter campus. No permit needed. Room Location: We are meeting in Shiley Hall, Room 319 on the University of Portland campus (5000 N. Willamette Blvd) Campus Map: https://campusmap.up.edu/
