Virtual events

How online events are discovered and shown to guests across Eventship.

Virtual (online) events reach people anywhere — they're not limited to the city you or your host profile is based in.

Who sees your virtual event

When you set an event's location to Online, it appears globally on Eventship. Specifically, it shows up for:

  • Anyone browsing Discover with the Online filter selected — regardless of where they are
  • Anyone browsing Discover with the default All filter — virtual events are always included alongside local in-person events
  • Anyone who searches by keyword, host name, or topic — search results are not geographically limited
  • People who follow your host — they see your event the same way as any other
  • Weekly digest emails — every user who gets the digest has a "Virtual events" section featuring upcoming online events platform-wide

What the Online filter does

The Discover page has three filter modes:

  • Nearby — in-person events within a distance radius of where the guest is
  • Online — virtual events only, shown to everyone globally
  • All (default) — nearby in-person events plus every upcoming virtual event

In other words, a virtual event you host in San Diego will still appear on Discover for someone browsing in London, New York, or Toronto.

Hybrid events

If your event is Hybrid (has both an address and a virtual link), it appears in both buckets — it can show up as a nearby in-person event for people close to the venue, and as an online event for everyone else.

Tips for virtual event visibility

  • Use a clear, descriptive title — virtual events often reach guests who found you through search, not proximity
  • Mention the timezone in the event description — guests joining from different regions need to know when to show up in their local time
  • Add relevant categories — category filtering works the same for virtual and in-person events
  • Share the event link directly with your audience — Discover is one channel, but direct sharing is still the fastest way to fill seats
